Small Business Week 2022: How Does PPB Support Small Businesses?

Did you know that small businesses account for half of America’s workforce? In fact, more new jobs come from small businesses than from any other source. Small businesses are vital to keeping America running.

During small business week, it is the time of year that we focus on shopping locally and small. It’s an amazing way to stay connected with your community, it also helps your neighborhood thrive and grow.

Piroshky Piroshky is constantly investing in its community through local partnerships with vendors like Mondo & Sons, Tillamook Cheddar & Ulis’s Famous Sausage as well as supporting our neighbors through charitable initiatives like disaster relief and the Pike Place Market Foundation.

For our meat and protein needs, we are happy to partner with Mondo & Sons – a fourth generation family-owned butcher shop and meat processor focusing on locally sourced and sustainably raised proteins. They are custom crafters of small batch artisanal hams, bacon, sausage and dry aged meats.

For our cheese piroshky, we work with another local partner – Tillamook! Since 1909, they’ve been dedicated to making the best cheese with the best ingredients. They work with local farmers, who cared for the land, which sustained healthier cows, which provided better milk – a recipe that hasn’t failed them in over a century. We are happy to work with partners who care so deeply about their ingredients and sustainable farming practices.

And for our Uli’s Jalapeno & Cheddar Cheese Sausage, of course, we partner up with Uli’s Famous Sausage. Our Pike Place Market neighbor and a long-time partner, Uli’s Famous Sausage is locally owned and operated by German Master Butcher Uli Lengenberg, with over 40 years of experience in sausage production. Uli’s Famous Sausage is made daily from the best cuts of meat, the finest in-house blended spices, and, most importantly, with love for their craft and customers.

Every day, we are proud to work with various local partners and small businesses all around the Pacific Northwest. It is of the utmost importance for us to continue contributing to the small business community in our region.

Mother’s Day

Mother’s Day is a time to celebrate all the incredible mothers in our lives.

Motherhood is an incredibly impressive job. That’s why Mother’s Day should not just be about our own moms but also all the amazing mothers out there.

Moms are the best, sacrificing for their families, making tough decisions on behalf of others even when it comes to things like what they eat or how much sleep we get ourselves.

They always have our backs, no matter what and they never get enough kudos for all that work done in the workplace, around the home, or even making sure everything goes smoothly with siblings. Mother’s Day is a time to celebrate all the incredible mothers in our lives.

Whether they’re single, married, or divorced – we appreciate you as both parent and person! So here are some ways that will make this Mother’s Day extra special:

  • Design a homemade card or collage, thanking her for all she does.
  • Give her a day off, and book mom a getaway or spa day.
  • Help her with a project or her to-do list.
  • Volunteer or donate to her favorite charity
  • Make her breakfast in bed or a special meal. May we suggest Piroshky?🤗

Meet Our Mascot

Phinn the Salmon Piroshky: Always ready for adventure on the go, they are the perfect mealtime companion!

Say Hello to the Piroshky Piroshky ‘mascot’, Phinn the Salmon Piroshky.

Always ready for adventure on the go, they are the perfect mealtime companion, and on a cold day a great way to keep your hands warm!

Here are some tasty tidbits about this flaky savory little pie of salmon.

About:

Phinn is a piroshky filled with salmon pâté. When Phinn the Salmon Piroshky was just a little pie, they knew they wanted to be a star. Lucky for them, they were born with the perfect ingredients to achieve their dreams! Made in the Pacific Northwest, they originally called the Pike Place Market in Seattle home.

Inside a glass case on a countertop in a very tiny bakery, they found residence among the other delicious piroshky. Every day, once the ovens turned on, the aroma would waft out of the bakery and into the market, which would always create a line out of the door.

Behind the glass counter, they loved the way everyone in line looked at them with admiration and joy, and they wanted to make everyone feel the same.

Sometimes they could hear fishmongers at the Market Entrance throwing their relatives up in the air and people clapping with awe and joy, which always brings a lot of nostalgia from Salmon’s early days.

Phinn was happy knowing that people loved their food as much as they loved making it.

As much as they loved living in the bakery, the Salmon Piroshky would dream of adventure with the wish to warm hearts and hands everywhere.  Whether it was exploring the beautiful Pacific Northwest, going on a walk in their paper bag through the city, or cheering on the home team at a game, this little pie was made to be on the go! It even enjoyed its therapeutic time in the freezer once in a while!

So, they set out into the world, making friends wherever they went. Hikers, foodies, athletes, tourists, celebrities, travelers, chefs, entire families, and even kids, everyone loved them! Word spread quickly, their willingness to go anywhere anytime makes them the perfect mealtime companion.

Even with their newfound fame and popularity across the globe, they knew their journey was far from over! Salmon Piroshky’s desire for stardom and adventure only grew stronger over time. Now was the moment for them to spread their little fins and fly.

High protein content helps this little salmon travel all over the United States. Sharing piroshky love wherever they go, making friends with everyone they meet, leaving only a trail of tasty crumbs and happy smiles behind.

Announcing our Easter Kulich, it’s back for a very limited time only. This fluffy dessert is a traditional Eastern European bread is filled with raisins and citrus, then topped off with sweet icing and festive sprinkles.

It’s airy, buttery, and delicious! It’s a perfect addition to any Easter table or holiday celebration. 🐣

(AVAILABLE- 1 week only! Monday, April 11th – Sunday, April 17th)

This April we would love a chance to be a part of your Easter festivities – or just simply a part of the beginning of your Spring!

Every year, around this time, the familiar aromatic scent of our popular holiday cake returns, as our bakers begin to bake off the first batches of our Kulich.

The Kulich is a traditional Russian bread, that is both airy and soft, lightly dotted with raisins, where each bite delivers a sweet, citrusy, and buttery note. It is a wonderful addition to any meal or Easter table.

Made by hand, and with love, our bakers mold the batter into a beautiful, towering cylinder, that is left to raise in a mold (some even use coffee tins to execute this molding).

Our Kulich is then gently baked in our oven, and once finished and cool, it is lightly glazed with icing and festive colorful sprinkles, reminiscent of the blossoming flowers of spring.

Thank you for inviting us into your home and we hope to see you this Easter

What does the word piroshky mean?

The word piroshky (пирожки́) is a diminutive form of pirogi (пироги), the Russian word for “pies.” Literally, piroshky translates to “pielings” or “piesies.” Both words are plural; the singular of piroshky is piroshok (пирожок) and the singular of pirogi is pirog (пирог).

How long have piroshky been around?

People have been making piroshky for at least a thousand years. They were present at and documented at feasts in medieval Kyiv, at tables of Vladimir the Great.

It’s popularly believed that the wives of eighteenth-century mine workers developed them as convenient lunches for their husbands to take to work.

Piroshky remain popular today just as much for their convenience as their deliciousness.

BONUS Facts:

  • Piroshky Piroshky owns a trademark on the shape of our Smoked Salmon Pâté Piroshky. Only a few other companies, who were producing salmon piroshky of a similar shape before we secured the trademark, are allowed to duplicate our pattern.
  • Piroshky found its way to America with the surge in immigration among Russian Jews escaping religious persecution in the late nineteenth century.
  • The phrase on the back of our t-shirts (вот такие пироги) is pronounced “vote teh-KEE-yeh pyer-oh-GHEE” and translates as “These are the pies.” The phrase is colloquial; if declared confidently, it conveys strong confidence in the quality of our product.
  • Although potatoes make a satisfying filling for piroshky today, potatoes were not commonplace in Russia until the mid-nineteenth century. Before that, turnips and rutabagas were the primary root vegetables.

Statement from our Owner

In this extremely difficult time, we encourage our customers to join us in our support of the Ukrainian people.
We want to provide you with several resources to do so. (see below)

Hello All,

As you may be aware, there is an ongoing tragedy in Eastern Europe, with the Russian president invading and attacking its neighbor country, Ukraine. I would like to give you some background in hopes of shedding some light on our company and its history.

The original founders of Piroshky Piroshky immigrated from Estonia in the late 1980s.

I, myself, immigrated from Russia in 1999 and have been a citizen of the United States since I was 17 years old.  What is happening right now is both horrifying and unacceptable, and most Russian people are against the President’s military actions in Ukraine.

Our two nations and their people have centuries of history that are intertwined, while many share both backgrounds.  Even though we don’t have an “easy” history – no one would have thought that this tragedy would ever unfold.

A little bit about the fabric of our company – since its founding we have been able to create a diverse and safe work environment and culture over the years, without discrimination. We proudly represent what true diversity looks like – and we will continue to strive to uphold our values!

We have people that were born here, and those that have immigrated from all over the world.  Out of about 60 persons companywide, we have four Russian-speaking members – including me, the other 3 have Ukrainian roots and once (or still) called Ukraine their home!  Our hearts are hurting for them, and we are trying to be here for them as much as we can!

As some of you may have possibly experienced or heard/read – this conflict has brought up some anti-Russian sentiment not only towards people in Russia but towards “Russian-related” people and businesses across the world – even in a diverse country such as the U.S.

Piroshky Piroshky has inspired a lot of emotions in some; I want to underscore the company’s history, cultural fabric, and diversity in light of this.

We have seen some negative social media feedback, and I want to state that even if this feedback is possible, in someone’s view, “fair” towards me, it is, absolutely, unacceptable to the other 99% of individuals who work at Piroshky Piroshky, who make this company what it is. I would like to emphasize that if you are to be approached in a negative way, your priority is your safety and comfort. If you are being asked questions and you feel comfortable.

I encourage you to share your feelings and thoughts. If you do not want to engage in conversation, you are not obligated to. This is YOUR choice; this is the freedom of speech that this country has been built upon!

Please reach out to your manager about any negative incidents that you might experience (we hope this isn’t the case), as my number one priority is to keep you safe! I would like to extend a standing invitation to all of you who might want to speak with me one on one with any questions or concerns.

I can only hope that we can reflect and learn that this is a time to unite and not divide! This conflict is devastating lives, families, cities, communities and will be felt by all parties involved for many years to come.

Thank you,

Olga

Ukraine Support 🇺🇦

On February 24th, early in the morning, the Russian president began the invasion of its neighborly country, Ukraine. The whole world was shocked at the horrendous devastation caused by this unprovoked attack.

What is currently unfolding on Ukrainian territories is indeed a crime against humanity, not just a crime against Ukrainians and their land.

In our time, where a peaceful tomorrow isn’t promised, it is crucially important to stand together and support one another in times of need. It is important to show solidarity, speak up and stand up for what is right.

In this extremely difficult time, we encourage our customers to join us in our support of the Ukrainian people. Today, we want to provide you with several resources to do so.

If you would like to donate funds towards helping the Ukrainian army, please visit the links below:

As most Ukrainians are uniting to fight for their freedom and peaceful future, we are also called to unite and help the beautiful country of Ukraine. During this dark and difficult time, let’s stand together with the nation of Ukraine.

International Women’s Day

“Here’s to strong women: May we know them. May we be them. May we raise them.” –Unknown #IWD2022 #BreakTheBias

March is National Women’s History Month, International Women’s Week and March 8th is International Women’s Day.

The global day is a celebration of the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women, through the shared values of justice, dignity, hope, equality, collaboration, tenacity, appreciation, respect, empathy, and forgiveness.

As a Women-Owned Small Business, we break the bias every day! Did you know that our owner, Olga Sagan named the 2020 Washington Small Business Person of the Year?  In fact, 75% of our leadership team is female, with many team members filling traditionally male-dominated roles like Facilities Manager, Operations Manager, & Lead Driver.

Each plays a pivotal role in our day-to-day operations and success.

Ways you can celebrate #IWD2022: Learn about influential women, Support a Woman-Owned Small Business, Sign up for community service, or Raise funds for a Women’s Charity. “Here’s to strong women: May we know them. May we be them. May we raise them.” –Unknown

I will stop here directly after a meal. I can’t seem to stop anywhere in Pike Market without making a detour here 10/10. Flaky pastry, savory and sweet fillings, terrific flavor and texture combinations”

Saint Patricks Day

Though he is the patron saint of Ireland, many of the holidays’ traditions began here in America.

St. Patrick’s day is marked annually on March 17th. The Irish have observed this religious holiday for over 1000 years. As immigrants made their way to America, it became a way to honor their heritage while embracing their new homeland. It often came with parades, food, and a little bit of partying.

Though he is the patron saint of Ireland, many of the holidays’ traditions began here in America. Records show that a St. Patrick’s Day parade was held on March 17, 1601, in a Spanish colony in what is now St. Augustine, Florida.

Corned Beef & Cabbage, The meal that has become a St. Patrick’s Day staple across the country, is also an American innovation. While ham and cabbage were eaten in Ireland, corned beef proved a cheaper substitute for impoverished immigrants.

Many of today’s traditions made to commemorate the day developed in the United States, with The Irish are now adopting St. Patrick’s Day traditions from Irish America such as corned beef and cabbage.

However, you commemorate the day, take a moment to recite a blessing, enjoy a meal or drink with friends or family, and don’t forget to wear green!   🍀🇮🇪💚 #HappySaintPatricksDay

A kneading of tastes & cultures, since 1992.

If you have ever visited our bakery, it is likely that you are already a fan! However, if you are new to us, you might need a little more convincing. We understand 🙂 Here, we have compiled 8 reasons to enjoy Piroshky Piroshky anytime whenever you are craving our famous handmade pies.

1. Unique & Original Flavor

At Piroshky Piroshky, we offer all types of flavors – traditional, local, and flavors from all over the world!  Since 1992, we’ve served original recipes with a PNW twist.

Cultivating traditional recipes and integrating them with tastes from all over the world. From our traditional fare such as our Cinnamon Cardamom Braid to our Smoked Salmon Pate piroshky, we embrace diversity, not only in our pastries but in everything we do, especially our menu!

2. High Quality Quick Bites

Each of our 32 different Piroshkies is made fresh by hand every day. From our Smoked Salmon Pate to our Uli’s Jalapeño Cheddar Sausage, from Apple Cinnamon Rolls to Cinnamon Cardamom Braids, every Piroshky we make follows thirty years of tradition.

All our pastries are made with love, for you to enjoy. Whether you visit one of our three locations or order online – you can always count on your piroshky to be fresh-out-of-the-oven delicious.

Potato & Cheese – A hit with fans children and adults alike.

3. Premium Ingredients

Not only are our piroshky made from scratch and by hand, we only use carefully selected premium ingredients to prepare our items.

Our Chocolate Cream Hazelnut roll is made with house-made hazelnut Chocolate with actual bits of Hazelnut.

The Cheddar Garlic Roll is filled with award-winning naturally aged creamy Tillamook cheddar cheese, fresh green onions, and garlic until it is bursting with flavor.

Veggie Chipotle is filled with crumbled Field Roast, a spicy Mexican plant-based sausage seasoned to perfection with cumin and oregano. From sweet to savory, each one of our menu items is crafted with care.

4. Supporting Small Business

Including a PNW twist in our pies means we’re committed to supporting local businesses and incorporating local flavors into our traditional piroshky.

Many of our piroshky contain seasonings from Market Spice, a world-famous purveyor located in the Pike Place Market for over 100 years! When you’re biting into our Jalapeno Cheese Sausage or Chicken, Curry & Rice piroshky – you will taste the house-blended and handcrafted Uli’s Famous Sausage.

Our best-selling Beef and Cheese piroshky has award-winning, naturally-aged cheddar from Tillamook Cheese and fresh beef from Mondo & Son’s meatpacking.  This fourth-generation family-owned butcher shop uses locally sourced and sustainable proteins. Our Spinach, Ham & Cheese Piroshky contains their small-batch artisanal ham.

Whether it is Field Roast, Uli’s Famous Sausage, Tillamook Cheddar, Market Spice, or Mondo & Sons we work together to support and promote other Seattle & Northwest economies.

Working w/ our Local Partners is just one of the ways we integrate PNW flavor into our menu.

Not only are you enjoying an item that tastes good, when you purchase an item from us, but you are also often supporting multiple local and small businesses. So you can feel good too!

5. Seattle’s Iconic Bakery

We have been serving our original recipes for over 30 years. Over time, we’ve grown from being a local favorite to a worldwide tourist destination.
